India has emerged as one of the fastest leading travel, tourism, aviation and hospitality powers in the world. Travel & Tourism has become one of the most powerful and dynamic sectors of the Indian economy in the past few years. Holidays has moved up in 'spending' priority, mostly Indian tourists spend on Travel, Hotels, Shopping, Food and Leisure. Almost 100 million Indians are Professionals or Entrepreneurs. According to a survey, passengers travelled by Railways (5.8 Billion), Domestic airlines (15 million), International Airlines (7 Million). Over the next decade, WTTC estimates annualized demand growth of 8.8%, the highest in the world.
Outbound:
India is one of the largest contributors in developing an attractive outbound market in the World. One of the biggest markets, the number of outbound travelers is increasing every year 3.46 million in 1996 to 8.34 million in 2006 and continuously recorded much stronger growth. Indians are generous and they are good spenders. Recognizing the tremendous potentials in Outbound Indian Traffic, numerous International and National Tourism Organizations/Boards increased their marketing and promotions and opened Tourism Offices/GSA/PSA in India. Malaysia, Dubai, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, Srilanka, Star Cruises and many more international tourism boards/organizations witnessed growth in their business.
Inbound:
India is the Hotspot for foreign tourists. The Central and State Tourism Departments/ Government efforts played a leading role in tourist arrivals. An analysis of tourist arrival in 2006 has shown that UK has become the largest tourist market for India surpassing the USA, the leader so far. Now, UK has 16.5% share in our total arrival followed by USA 15.7%. The arrivals from top 10 international markets during 2006 are UK, USA, Canada, France, Germany, SriLanka, Japan, Australia, Malaysia and Nepal. The estimated number of Foreign Tourist Arrivals touched 5 million in 2007 as compared to 4.45 million in 2006.
Domestic:
It is also important to mention that large number of domestic tourists travelled to various states/destinations in India. The domestic tourism in the country has seen phenomenal explosion. According to Ministry of Tourism (MOT), 461.16 million (approx) people travelled various parts of the country in 2006.
